— DESIGN SPRINT CHALLENGE

Team Brother Bear

— ROLE

UX Researcher

UI Designer

— DATE

5 Days

(November 2022)

During our bootcamp, we were tasked to complete a 5-day challenge of designing for social good. This means that we had to design to help non-profit, NGOs (Non-Governmental Organization), and social enterprises in order to extend their reach, grow support, and drive impact on the world's most pressing challenges.

I worked in a group of 5 and want to thank my partners Kate Baldrey, Duff Isberg, Essraa Ghamdan, and Alan Tweedley.

The non-profit chosen was Team Brother Bear. They are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children who have been diagnosed with brain tumors.

Problem Space & Goals

After viewing the current Team Brother Bear site, we came up with goals:

  • 1. Lead with children, not adults in a corporate environment.

  • 2. A clearer vision of the charities goals.

  • 3. Improve their donation flow.

  • 4. Make the landing page readable/accessible.

  • 5. More content that can explain Team Brother Bears purpose.

  • 6. Update their branding to make it more cohesive and modern.

Research & Development

To begin with our research, we created a user map in the eyes of a potential donator.

With the user map, we were able to find assumptions and turn them into questions.

Some assumptions included:

Users want a quick and easy donating checkout process.

Users want to know where their money is going.

As a group, we assumed that users would want an easier process when donating and that users want to know where their money is going, so that they can feel better about their donation.

To test these assumptions we then conducted testing.

Synthesizing the Interviews

  • Potential donors are more likely to engage with an organization if they are shown concrete evidence of the charities legitimacy.

Donors want to be shown how their donations are directly affecting the chosen cause.

Main Insight: Donors are much more likely to engage with an organization if they are provided concrete evidence of how their donations are directly affecting the cause they are donating towards, and the legitimacy of the charitable organization.

How Might We?

How might we convince potential donors of Team Brother Bear’s legitimacy as a charitable organization, so they can feel more confident that their donations truly make a difference in children diagnosed with brain tumors?

With our HMW, we were able to create our persona: Alartina.

Design Execution

To being our design execution, we started to find some inspiration from other charity and NPO sites and one thing we all noticed was we had the same landing page inspiration.

Once we had an idea of how to rethink the Team Brother Bear website, we all sketched together a new landing page and a new donation checkout page.

Initial Prototype

User Testing Insights

1. One time/Recurring payment option on our donation flow

2. Accessibility issues

3. More convincing content throughout

4. Add more CTA’s into donation flow from multiple touch points

Key Learnings & Next Steps

Key Learnings

As we were assigned this task, we had the opportunity to dive deeper into social design and learn all about the challenges in this space from the effectiveness of a landing page to instill trust in users wanting to donate to the actual experience of the donation flow.

Our team managed to accomplish an incredible amount of work and I think we all noticed the progression of our various skillsets

considering our relatively short timeline.

Next Steps

The next steps for us would be to review our hi-fi prototype with the rest of the team and then collaborate with engineers to build out the new website and donation flow.

From the completion stage, we want to hold a fundraising event where the new and improved Team Brother Bear site is featured front and centre.
